This article isn't just me recommending a movie with "watch" in the name, but I wanted to point out that Watchmen is another movie you can throw in the pile of films with nods to watch appreciation. There is of course the doomsday clock, that slowly moves closer to midnight. There is the fact that it was his watch that got Jon Osterman his unfortunate opportunity to turn into Dr. Manhattan because he forgot the watch in the experiment chamber and went to get it. There is also the fact that Jon's (Dr. Manhattan) father was a watchmaker - with the accompanying childhood flashback scene where the young Jon is asked by his father to take apart and put back together a mechanical watch. And of course there is the product placement of the (older) mechanical Timex watch near the end of the movie.  This is an impressive list of watch related content. Of course, all of it is from the graphic novel (not the Timex though), but I applaud the screen adapters' choice to include as much as they did in the film.

It takes the right type of person to enjoy the Citizen Astrodea watch collection. Your typical watch lover or nerd might not get it. You might need to built-in celestial appreciation or a career in astronomy to get giddy about a star map on your wrist. I am not really any of these of these types, but I still find a lot of fascination in this watch. I am also not going to explain all the functions of the watches (as there are two main versions). One is a fancy star chart, while the other is one of the most comprehensive moon phase watches out there. Lets look at the celestial version first. Basically, the entire dial spins (slowly of course, in 'real time'). Based on this movement you can tell a lot of things. These include what you can expect to see in the sky given the time of the year, including distances of stars and planet and astronomic occasions.  Oh, and while there are many versions of the steel watches out there (such as blue or cream colored dials and some with gold plating), there are also northern and southern hemisphere versions of the dial apparently available. In a nutshell here is what you will see on an Astrodea Celestial watch:

  • 1,109 stars on the dial (Watch comes with a magnifying glass to check them out)
  • Equinox Indications
  • Sunrise & Sunset
  • Daily Duration of Sunshine
  • Meridian
  • Ecliptic
  • Celestial Equator
  • Boundaries of Constellations

Survey Of The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Sport Watch History Feature Articles

Having said all that I think the Maitres du Temps is a luxury watch made for a select few. Actually, I don’t need to say that, as that IS the case. It is not going to be a “design classic.” The watch is more akin to a luxury timepiece built for those of royal demeanor (as I seem to keep repeating, but it is true). You won’t see this watch in a ‘good watch design book’ 40 years from now. You are more likely to see it in a museum, or being auctioned for astronomical prices. Maitres du Temps is creating modern treasures for those worthy of passing down relics or ‘a legacy.’ There won’t be a collectors market, because there will be just a few collectors lucky and wealthy enough to own them. It is a watch for a different class of person. Not necessarily a better or more successful type, but those people to whom aristocracy is a status quo, and not just bygone status of another time, in a different world. Price for the Chapter Two watch will be less than the Chapter One as it is less complicated, and will be for ,000.

This Limited Edition run of 4,999 pieces, presumably missing one for Danica herself, are super hot. A price tag of 5 proves Tissot's commitment to "democratic luxury." Their term, not mine, but I absolutely love it.

There is a reason I am going back and forth between the term bracelet and strap for this watch model to discuss the mesh steel. It is honestly a hybrid of both. Like a strap, it disconnects all the way without a deployment, but has something more interesting than a mere buckle. The unique patented attachment system on the strap works really well. The first step is sizing it. You place the watch on as you'd like it to fit, and the move the adjustable clasp over notches built into the mesh to a suitable location. This requires using a rigid tool (to release the lock on the clasp). Now that you have a suitable size for your wrist, each time you put the watch on, it fits the same, with the excess strap easily fitting around your wrist. Putting the watch on is simple to do, even with one hand. There is a little hook on one side of the strap that sits over a bar on the other side. Once you connect this (really easy), you push down one locking clasp to make it secure, and then another locking clasp (similar to clasps on diving watches) to make it doubly secure. For this reason, this watch features what I would consider to be a 'double locking clasp strap.' When closed, it looks clean and feels secure on your wrist with the Skagen signature staring back at you.

Appreciating the Maitres du Temps Chapter Two watch gets even easier seeing stunning live video of the watch. Founder and owner Steven Holtzman discusses the luxury timepiece in this new video by aBlogtoRead.com content partner TheTimeTv.com. He takes a good approach to discussing the "volume" line (still only about 200 a year) of Maitres du Temps watches compared to the ultra exclusive Chapter One watch. The video is worth a view not only because of the discussion, but also because of the crafty video of the watch itself. You really get a good feel for the curves, the beauty, the finish, and the boldness of the dial. It keeps getting better looking each time I see it.

Omega Speedmaster Galaxy Express 999

Like most military inspired watches Arctos decided to keep the face simple and legible - which it is. The generous amount of luminant on the dials contrasted against the black face will make it easy to read. Inside the watch is a European automatic mechanical movement - viewable through the caseback window. The screw-down caseback of the watch is titanium as these types of pieces are not wise to construct out of a ceramic material.

How a Speedmaster ended up in David Bowie’s album art

The recently announced Perrelet Turbine watch (that I discussed here) has proved extremely popular, which is a good thing because this new video sheds more light upon this impressive timepiece. You get not only a great view of the watch in action, but a good understanding of how the double rotor system is engineered. Seeing the watch in the video in operation allows me to appreciate this desirable timepiece all the more.

It is getting to the point where I write more than anything else, but that is OK because I love it. Eventually some of you will need to help contribute to keep all my content bases covered. My newest area of watch passion expression is Examiner.com. The fare is arguably lighter, but is for a slightly different audience - still the talk is on watches. Examiner.com will need no introduction to some, but is basically a large news and opinion site where writers of different focuses and specializations are selected and given dedicated pages. I've been selected as the Men's Luxury Style writer for San Francisco, which essentially means that I will be talking about watches. Though when related luxury style items come up, I am sure I will mention them ("but watches are all that I know!").

The watches comes in a special type of watch case concept that Louis Moinet was the first to jump on. Working in conjunction with Orbita, Louis Moinet will offer each piece with a watch case that doubles as a winder. I took some images of the case for you to see while visiting with Orbita. When closed, the case looks like the two volumes of Louis Moinet's historic watch treatise, and when opened you find the placement for the watch and a cabinet for manuals and straps. The Orbita winder is part of their new Casetta line that is meant to be a modular winder to be used for many purposes. The winder is silent and uses a special 5-7 year lithium ion battery. I really like that Louis Moinet is the first luxury watch company to jump aboard the "useful watch case" bandwagon including the winder as part of each new automatic watch they offer (as far as I hear).

What is really nice about this version of the new Formula 1 is the clean but attractive face that is very pleasing to look at and use. See the image of another new for 2009 Tag Heuer Formula 1 watch, the Grande Date Chronograph. This watch just feels so cluttered and contradictory to the point of this timepiece. Sure it looks cool, but I wouldn't want to live with it each day. The Formula 1 Grande Date has a large subsidiary seconds dial with an integrated big date. It is hard to see the big date in the images (how ironic), but it is at the 6 o'clock position. The hands on the face are totally new for the watch line, and I think I like them. The best part of the dial are the raised hour numerals and indexes. They have a rich amount of Superluminova so that they will glow. This of course is on the black faced model. The white faced model is basically all lume, with the numerals and markers being in black.

Just look at these two images, first is one of Pontiac's most horrid trends, the "plastic body cladding," that parasitically attached itself to possibly savable designs. You can see body the body cladding on this forgettabley fugly Pontiac Grand Am. Then you'll be reminded of Pontiac's most infamous eye sore, the Aztek. Oh man, what were they thinking? This utter abomination of taste and tact actually found a handful of buyers who perhaps had a sympathetic weakness for a design that only a blind driver could love.

Perrelet, a seemingly quiet brand with TONS of potential, is going beyond print ads and marketing materials with this elegant video of the Perrelet Diamond Flower Rotor Watch. Which is a brilliant idea, especially for this model.

Mr. Pittsinger has received “Artist of the Year” Awards from New York City Opera (Don Giovanni, Figaro, and Orlando), Pittsburgh Opera (Boito’s Mefistofele and Gounod’s Faust) as well as “Outstanding Alumnus Award” from his undergraduate alma mater University of Connecticut. He also holds a Master’s Degree from Yale University.

Overall, it's an excellent watch that I can recommend without hesitation. The addition of a US office and two-year warranty change Sea-Gull from gamble to 'why not?', and the results are an incredibly good value. It's not yet time for the Swiss to panic, but I'd certainly hope that they're paying attention. "
